Common Misconceptions

Top 5 Questions and Myths About Chiropractic Care

So you are thinking of visiting a chiropractic physician, but have some questions that need to be addressed first, well you have come to the right place. We have compiled a list of the top five most commonly asked questions and myths about chiropractors below to help you make an informed decision.

What is Subluxation?

Subluxation is when your spinal segments are no longer properly aligned. This misalignment puts pressure on the spinal nerves, and causes numbness and tingling. You may feel more tired than normal, and suffer from headaches and back and neck pain. Additionally, you may be more susceptible to illness since your nervous system also controls immunity. It is a Chiropractor’s job to realign these segments so that your nervous system can operate properly.

“Popping” Joints Causes Damage

When certain adjustments are made by your Chiropractor, you may hear a popping noise. This noise is simply the fluid around your joints releasing a gas, much like you hear when popping your knuckles. Multiple studies have been conducted and there has never been evidence found that this release of gas causes damage or degeneration to your joints.

Will The Adjustments Hurt?

If you are having adjustments made for the first time, you may feel some “exercise soreness.” This means that you will feel some minor ache, much like you feel after a good workout. In fact, most patients love visiting the Chiropractor because they feel great when they leave.

How Long Will My Treatment Take

Most adjustments take only 5-10 minutes, but the length of time spent of treatment really depends on what your individual needs are. Most Chiropractors make manual adjustments, meaning the doctor adjusts your spine using pressure created with his hands. An activator may be used as well to facilitate with the more difficult adjustments.

Why Do I Have To Come Back?

Most musculoskeletal problems are the result of months or even years of compilation. You simply cannot undo in a day what took months to create. It takes time to overcome the damage that the body has undergone, and most people don’t visit a Chiropractor until the problem has existed for a while. When you bend over to pick up a sock off the floor and your back screams in agony, it was not the weight of the sock that caused the problem! Your body had a pre-existing weakness that was simply revealed to you when you bent over in a certain position. This new found problem is really an old problem recently brought to light and will take some time to correct.
